ISLAMABAD: Vice President of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), Salim Saifullah Khan, has called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take a decisive action and finalise the schedule of the Champions Trophy, warning that any further delay could create unnecessary complications.

Speaking to The News, Salim Saifullah drew comparisons with the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) bold decision during the Davis Cup 2024. He praised ITF’s authority in compelling the Indian Lawn Tennis Federation to send its team to Pakistan despite government opposition.

“When the Indian tennis team refused to travel to Pakistan, ITF stood its ground and made it clear that India had to either concede the Davis Cup tie or send their team to Pakistan. The governing body refused to entertain excuses, even after hearing India’s plea about government restrictions,” he stated.

He revealed that despite initial hesitations, India sent an 18-member Davis Cup contingent to Pakistan, exceeding the standard eight-to-ten members. “Not only did the Indian team play in Pakistan, but they also enjoyed their stay, with some even expressing a desire to extend their visas.”

Salim Saifullah urged the ICC to emulate the ITF’s firm stance by setting a clear deadline for India to either participate in Pakistan or withdraw from the Champions Trophy altogether.

“India may be a significant cricketing market, but prioritising one member damages the sport’s reputation. A hybrid model would signal ICC’s inability to act as the governing authority for cricket,” he remarked, warning against compromises that undermine the game’s future.

About tennis, Salim Saifullah reaffirmed his commitment to uplifting the sport in Pakistan. As the Patron of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), he pledged financial backing for the Kulsoom Saifullah Ranking Tennis Tournament, scheduled to start on December 29 in Islamabad.

“We initiated several ranking events to develop tennis in Pakistan, and most of them still continue. However, I regret the discontinuation of events like Benazir Bhutto Tennis and the unfortunate ransacking of the Islamabad Tennis Complex,” he added, expressing hope for judicial intervention to restore the facilities.

Salim Saifullah’s bold remarks signal his unwavering dedication to fair play and the development of both cricket and tennis on national and international platforms.
