Ghotki district in Sindh is one of the country’s major sugar cane producing zones. There are five major sugar mills in Ghotki. These sugar mills play a vital role in boosting the regional and national economy. However, it has been observed the arrival of sugar cane season leads to many problems. In particular, traffic congestion and jams slow down the entire supply chain. These jams are often caused by overloaded vehicles and drivers who appear to be untrained in handling heavy vehicles.
The overweight vehicles also have a damaging impact on the road infrastructure. It is a shame that sugar mill owners do not seem to be worried about these problems and are mainly preoccupied with their profits. The provincial authorities must step in and save the affected areas from the seasonal traffic jams.
