LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has terminated the contract of red-ball high-performance coach Tim Nielsen, sparking uncertainty about head coach Jason Gillespie’s future with the team.

Nielsen, appointed on Gillespie’s recommendation in August, was let go just before the Test series against South Africa, leaving the team in disarray. His contract was set to renew after the Australia series but was not extended by the PCB, reportedly without consulting Gillespie.

The developments have added to Gillespie’s frustration, as his role has already been limited to match-day strategist, with his selection panel duties stripped already. While PCB previously denied rumors of Gillespie’s dismissal, speculation persists that his tenure could end after the South Africa series.

Adding to the drama, Gillespie has reportedly opted out of traveling with the team to South Africa. His absence is a major blow to Pakistan’s preparations for the crucial two-match Test series, which begins on December 26 in Centurion.

Former Pakistan pacer and current white-ball coach Aqib Javed has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the red-ball coaching role. Known for his tactical expertise and rapport with younger players, Javed’s appointment is expected to bring stability to the team during this turbulent period.

Pakistan faces a formidable South African side at home, making strong leadership crucial. With players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at the core, the coaching staff will be under pressure to inspire a consistent performance.

“The sudden coaching changes have added tension to Pakistan’s camp, with the team’s performance in the ICC World Test Championship hanging in the balance. The players will hope the PCB swiftly resolves the turmoil and ensures a stable preparation for this critical series,” confided a player.

Upcoming Test Series Schedule:

1st Test: December 26-30, Centurion

2nd Test: January 3-7, Cape Town.
