HEC disbursed over Rs301bn as federal grant to 156 public varsities in 5 years

Sindh tops other provinces by allocating Rs20.024 billion to various institutions

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training told the National Assembly (NA) that during the last five years, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has disbursed an amount of Rs301.431 billion as federal grant to the 156 public universities/HEIs across the country.

While the provinces have disbursed an amount of Rs26.601 billion to the universities located in the respective provinces, with Sindh top among disbursing the over 20 billion to the universities in Sindh.

In a reply to question of Muhammad Mobeen Arif, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training shared the details of five year funding to the 156 Public universities as per detail, in 2019-20 Rs57.292 billion, in 2020-21 Rs61,590 billion, in 2021-22 Rs60.31 billion, in 2022-23 Rs61.139 billion, in 2023-24 Rs61.093 billion.

In addition to the federal government grant, the provincial governments have disbursed an amount of Rs26.601 billion to the universities located in the respective provinces.

According to details shred with the National Assembly, Sindh top among the provinces with allocating Rs19.087 billion and Rs936 million as bailout package to 28 HEIs that makes the total allocation of Rs20.024 billion.

Punjab grants in 2023-24 total HEIs 22 actual allocation of Rs1. 297 billion.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to 5 HEIs gave a bailout Package of Rs1.825 billion.

Balochistan allocated to Rs2.078 billion to 8 HEIs and Rs1.278 billion as a bailout Package that makes total allocation of Rs3.455 billion.
