The Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd. has been pulling out all stops to bring down the incidences of gas theft. With the availability of gas decreasing on an yearly basis due to lack of new reserves and depleting current natural gas reserves, the country has seen a rise in gas theft cases, where culprits make use of rubber pipes, clamps, and other material to access gas illegally from the Company’s mains service line.

In order to bring down the rising instances of gas theft, the SSGC’s Security Services and Counter Gas Theft Operations (SS&CGTO) department together with teams from the Customer Relations Department (CRD), have been conducting surveys and raiding gas theft infested colonies.

Over the past week, these two teams have disconnected a record breaking 4,964 illegal gas connections, with 4,771 disconnections in Karachi, 125 in Quetta, 65 in Hyderabad, and 3 in Nawabshah. The highest number of gas theft cases that were disconnected in Karachi were centered around Baldia Town and Pakland Bin Qasim Town, where a large number of residents had been involved in this heinous crime.

Gas theft is a serious crime against the community and strict action will be taken against all those involved in such activities. Recently, SS&CGTO teams along with SSGC Police raided a hotel in Karachi’s FB Area where a citizen, Muhammad Fayyaz, was accessing gas illegally from the main line. He was arrested on spot and an FIR was registered against him.

Meanwhile, in another raid carried out at Ubaid Medical Center and Maternity Home situated at Baldia Town, Karachi, Abdul Razzaq was found using gas illegally by directly accessing it from the company’s main line to power heavy gas generator. All equipment used for illegally obtaining gas was removed and seized, and appropriate claims will be raised against both suspects.
