KARACHI: K-Electric (KE), a key player in Pakistan’s energy sector, is one step closer to realising its ambitious renewable energy goals. On Wednesday, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) concluded hearings on KE’s Bid Evaluation Report for its 150MW solar energy projects in Winder and Bela, Balochistan.

These projects are a critical part of the company’s broader plan to diversify Pakistan’s energy mix, reduce dependence on imported fuels and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. The hearing marks a significant step forward for KE, following the regulator’s approval earlier this year for the company’s first competitive bidding process in the renewable energy sector. The Winder and Bela projects represent the first tranche of KE’s larger target to add 1,300MW of renewable energy to its portfolio by 2030, with a near-term goal of integrating 30 per cent renewable energy into its generation mix. This move aligns with global energy trends as companies seek to transition away from fossil fuels in favour of cleaner alternatives.

Over the past year, KE’s renewable initiatives have garnered considerable investor interest. The company received 15 bids for its Winder and Bela projects, while its pioneering 220MW hybrid solar-wind project in Dhabeji, Sindh, attracted seven bids. These developments signal a shift in the country’s energy landscape, with highly competitive tariff bids that suggest increasing investor confidence in the sector.

Chief Strategy Officer at KE Shahab Qader noted that the conclusion of the hearing was a pivotal moment in the company’s renewable energy journey. “This process is a key milestone in our efforts to address Pakistan’s energy challenges and reduce our carbon footprint,” he said.
