KARACHI: Mohammad Sarfaraz Ali Metlo has been elected the president of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) for the year 2024-25 in the annual bar association polls that were held on Saturday.
According to the results announced by the election commissioner, Zulfiqar Ali Khan Jalbani, Metlo has been declared the elected president after securing 2,971 votes. The other contestants for the president, Mohammad Haseeb Jamali and M Irfan Hasan secured 2,254 and 16 votes respectively.
Mohammad Rahib Lakho was elected the vice president after bagging 1,736 votes, defeating Ahteshamullah Khan, Ayazuddin Qureshi, Mohammad Imran Shamsi, Niaz Mohammad Ghumro and Rakhshanda Waheed who obtained 636, 1,338, 159, 674 and 581 votes respectively.
Mirza Sarfaraz Ahmed was declared the returning candidate for the office of honorary secretary with 1,850 votes. He defeated Ali Asghar, Hakim Ali Shar, Khalil Ahmed, MsMasooda Siraj, Rahman Dino Mahesar and Razia Danish who obtained 437, 652, 1,248, 307, 472 and 231 votes respectively.
Athar Ali Memon was declared successful for the post of treasurer after securing 2,255 votes against Mohammad Yashin Shahid Bhatti and Taimur Ali Mirza who polled 996 and 1,884 votes.
Waseem Saif Khoso won the joint secretary’s post after polling 1,657 votes. He defeated Ayaz Ali Chandio, Faisal Ahmed Memon, Rehman Ghani and Zafar Hussain who secured 708, 952, 771 and 1,100 votes respectively.
Faiqa Ameen was elected additional joint secretary for female affairs. She polled 3,018 votes and defeated Syeda Sara Kanwal who bagged 2,057 votes.
The managing committee members of the SHCBA who have been elected include Safia Qadir, Aamer Latif, Zahida Kamal Alvi, Mohammad Amir Khosa, Rizwan Ali Rajpar, Mohammad Faisal Khan, Urooj Ikhlaq, Dewan Tarachand and Ubedullah Abro.
Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Barrister Metlo on being elected as the president of the SHCA.
The prime minister also congratulated Ahsan Bhoon, head of the Independent Lawyers Group, on Metlo’s victory.
“I hope that the newly elected president and the Independent Lawyers Group will continue their efforts for the welfare of lawyers,” he said. He expressed hope that the Asma Jahangir group would continue to prioritise the politics of principles and its adherence as always. The PM said that the newly elected president would work tirelessly to strengthen the legal profession and continue his efforts to promote justice and democracy in the country.
