LAHORE:A young couple who had contracted a love marriage was murdered on Chandra Road, Kot Lakhpat, on Friday in what appears to be a suspected case of honour killing.
The victims, identified as Izhar, 20, and Benish, 17, hailed from Gilgit-Baltistan and had been living in a rented flat in the area since their marriage. The couple had reportedly been estranged from their families after defying their traditional norms for their love marriage.
The horrific incident came to light when neighbours reported suspicious activity at the couple’s residence. Upon arrival, the police found the victims had been tortured before their throats were slit. The crime scene indicated a struggle, suggesting the couple may have tried to resist their attackers.
Edhi volunteers transported the bodies to a morgue for post-mortem examination. Initial forensic reports are expected to shed light on the exact time and circumstances of the killings. Authorities suspect the involvement of individuals known to the victims, as there were no signs of forced entry into the flat. Investigators are also probing the possibility of family members or acquaintances seeking retribution over the couple’s union, which they believe dishonoured familial or cultural traditions.
The gruesome murders have sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking discussions about the dangers faced by couples who defy societal norms. Activists have called for strict action against honour-based violence and better legal protections for those exercising their right to marry by choice. Police have registered a case and are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators. "We are committed to bringing the culprits to justice," said a senior police officer, urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
