LAHORE:Police have arrested a suspect linked to the murder of a Punjab University student, Rana Ammar Akhtar, who was a student in the Gender Studies Department.

Initial investigations revealed that the fatal gunshot was fired by a friend inside a car, contrary to earlier reports suggesting motorcyclists were involved. According to police sources, the incident occurred when three friends—Dilawar, Huzaifa, and Ammar—were travelling together. Dilawar was driving, Ammar occupied the front seat, and Huzaifa sat in the back with a firearm. A bullet discharged inside the vehicle struck Ammar, fatally wounding him.

After the shooting, Huzaifa fled the scene, while Dilawar rushed Ammar to the hospital, where he died. Police are now investigating whether the shooting was accidental or the result of a dispute among the friends.

Meanwhile, the Punjab University (PU) administration has initiated disciplinary action against activists of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) for their involvement in vandalism following murder of the university student the other day.

A PU spokesman said the university administration had identified 11 IJT activists involved in the attack at various places with the help of eyewitnesses and footages while the process of identifying 30 unidentified IJT activists was under way. He said that a letter has also been sent to the disciplinary committee for legal action against the involved miscreants. The spokesperson further said that the IJT had falsely alleged that motorcyclists opened fire on the student. He said that IJT had lied about the death of the student. He said that the IJT had tried to damage the reputation of the university by spreading rumours. He said that the university administration would take action against the students involved in the incident without any pressure and without discrimination. He said that the university administration would ensure a peaceful environment in the university at all costs. He said that hooliganism on the campus would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Despite a senior police officer and FIR mentioning that the murder took place on the university premises, the PU spokesperson claimed that the mentioning of the campus was clearly based on hearsay, which was yet to be investigated.
