Plastic waste has become a major environmental issue in Pakistan. Our desire for convenience has contributed to the increased use of plastic, which has not only affected the environment but also human health. Plastic pollution releases harmful chemicals into soil and water, which can then enter the food chain. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Pakistan has one of the highest percentages of mismanaged plastic waste in South Asia. The country generates over 3.3 million tonnes of plastic garbage annually, with a large portion coming from single-use plastics such as bags, bottles, and packaging.
The poor waste management infrastructure exacerbates the issue, resulting in plastic pollution in rivers, agricultural lands and urban areas. There is no proper waste segregation system in Pakistan, where degradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable items are collected separately. Breaking free from plastic reliance can only be achieved through better public awareness campaigns, recycling systems and the development of eco-friendly alternatives.
