ISLAMABAD: Inspector General Police (IGP), Islamabad, Ali Nasir Rizvi, Thursday said checkpoints were set up to protect lives and property of 2.5 million citizens of the capital.
Talking to crime reporters, the IG said checkpoints were not for the display of police uniforms and alert jawans. “In addition to parliament, Supreme Court and Secretariat, the capital also houses embassies and diplomatic staff of 97 countries,” he said.
Inspector General Ali Nasir rejected the allegation of ethnic bias against the police and said, “Islamabad is a mini-Pakistan which has officials who are domiciled in Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and federal capital.”
The Islamabad IG remarked policemen deployed at the checkpoints were responsible people authorised to stop any vehicle or motorcycle deemed suspicious. He told the reporters that 750 people arrested during the protest were under investigation.
“It’s wrong to make viral a statement of the accused under investigation,” he observed and directed an inquiry into the matter.
