ISLAMABAD: Former Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani demanded that the Sindh government withdraw its Cabinet decision to amend the Sindh universities and Institutes Laws Act, 2018, regarding the appointment criteria of Vice Chancellors in general universities and the Sindh Assembly should not approve the amendment.
“This will pave the way for bureaucrats to become Vice Chancellors, which is condemned. The Vice Chancellors are not only administrators but are the academic leaders of the university,” he said in a statement while opposing the decision of the Sindh Cabinet to amend the Sindh universities and Institutes Laws Act, 2018. The former Chairman Senate argued that this is a retrogressive step and will have serious consequences on the academic standards and affect academic freedom in the universities.
Raza Rabbani said under the proposed bill the qualification of PhD holder academic is being dispensed with and it is being substituted by a government officer of grade 21 or above, having four years of experience and a relevant Master’s degree, to be appointed as Vice Chancellors of a general university. Rabbani said that the terms used in the bill are too unclear, making it easy for a bureaucrat’s appointment.
