This is with reference to the letter entitled ‘Assignments outdated’ (November 29, 2024) by G Akbar Palijo. I believe there is room to expand the writer’s critique of assessments. Rather than dismissing traditional assignments as obsolete, it is worth considering how they can be redesigned to address the challenges posed by AI tools. Integrating oral components, such as viva sessions or presentations, can validate the originality of students’ work while encouraging deeper understanding. It is also important to view AI tools not merely as threats to academic integrity but as potential allies in the learning process. When used responsibly, AI can aid students by helping them brainstorm ideas, refine their arguments, or receive instant feedback. Educators should guide students in leveraging these tools ethically, transforming potential misuse into an opportunity for skill enhancement.
