Majority of Pakistanis aware of causes of smog: survey

70% of Pakistanis said vehicles emitting smoke while 63% held industrial pollution as main cause of smog

ISLAMABAD: The majority of Pakistanis are aware of the causes of smog and hold vehicular smoke and industrial pollution as the main culprits. It was revealed in a survey by Ipsos Pakistan, in which 1,000 people participated from across the country.

The survey was conducted between November 18 and November 22, 2024.

To the question that what is the main cause of smog, 70% of Pakistanis said vehicles emitting smoke while 63% held industrial pollution as the main cause of smog.

Over 37% blamed garbage burning, 31% brick kilns, 30% crop burning and 11% held construction work as the main cause of smog spread.

Ipsos Pakistan also asked the public what they think is the reason for the failure to control smog.

In response, 44% of the people involved in the survey cited public non-cooperation as the main reason for the failure to eradicate smog.

Over 37pc cited non-enforcement of laws, 16% said it was because of lack of air quality laws, 8% cited lack of funds while 8% cited limited capacity of institutions as the main reasons for failure to control smog.
