LAHORE:A couple committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Shahdara police area on Sunday. The incident appeared to have been caused by a domestic dispute related to poverty. The deceased were identified as 27-year-old Majid and his 25-year-old wife Jamila Bibi, residents of Fazal Park Shahdara. Edhi volunteers shifted the bodies to the morgue.
Rs8.8m released for treatment of cops’ children
IG Punjab has released funds of Rs8.8 million for cochlear implant and bone marrow surgeries of six affected children of different police employees.
According to the details, Rs1.96 million was released for the cochlear implant surgery of Constable M Arshad's daughter, Rs1.96 million for the cochlear implant surgery of Constable Nadeem Ahmed's son, Rs1.96 million for the cochlear implant surgery of Constable Abdul Hameed's son, Rs1.83 million for the cochlear implant surgery of Traffic Warden M Ahad Rasheed's son, Rs1 million for the bone marrow transplant of Head Constable M Hassan's daughter, and Rs73,000 was released for the purchase of cochlear implant equipment for Head Constable M Hafeez's son.
Six cases registered in smog crackdown
Over the past 24 hours, six cases were registered during the smog crackdown across the province. At least 479 people were fined Rs962,000 and 40 were issued warnings. 15 violations of burning crop residues, 387 of vehicles emitting excessive smoke, four of industrial activities, five of brick kilns, 13 violations at other places were reported. A total of 3,716 accused were arrested and 3,735 cases were registered in the anti-smog crackdown this year. 7,380 people were warned and 37,975 people were fined. 2,049 violations of burning crop residues, 33,001 of vehicles emitting excessive smoke, 364 of industrial activities, 1,395 of brick kilns, and 360 violations at other places were reported. Spokesperson Punjab Police said that in the last 24 hours, challans were issued against 5,232 vehicles emitting excessive smoke, 405 were detained in police stations and the fitness certificates of 5 were suspended.
This year, challans were issued against 859,528 vehicles emitting excessive smoke on the highways, 169,881 vehicles were detained while the fitness certificates of 10,094 vehicles were suspended.
Three transformer thieves caught
Three transformer thieves were arrested on Sunday. On a tip-off, under the supervision of Executive Engineer (XEN Rural) Abrar Khan, authorities caught three accused of Chungi Amar Sidhu area of Lahore who were stealing a transformer last night in the area of Khudian north.
The thieves were handed over to local police. The accused confessed they had stolen 15 to 20 transformers from Kasur circle. The accused are members of a 20-member gang of transformer thieves.
