HYDERABAD: A rally of the Sindh Rawadari Committee started from the Old Campus area and reached the Hyderabad Press Club after passing through different roads on Saturday.

A large number of women participated in the rally, in which slogans were raised against the federal government’s plan for building six canals on the Indus River and the failure of the police to arrest the killers of Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar.

The participants raised slogans against the canal construction plan. A large number of members and workers of the PPP-Shaheed Bhutto, JSQM, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and other civil society and organisations participated in the Sindh Rawadari rally.

On this occasion, Alia Bakhshal, Asda Butt, Irfana Mallah, Amar Sindhu, Niaz Kalani, Iqbal Mallah and others said that they would not compromise on the rights of Sindh nor would they allow peace and order to be disturbed.

They said the killers of Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar should be arrested and the plan to build six canals on the River Indus should be stopped; otherwise, the protest would gain momentum.

On the other hand, the Tehreek Labbaik Paksitan (TLP) had announced it would take out a rally in Hyderabad, due to which the police arrested TLP workers on Friday night.

On Saturday, after the Sindh Rawadari rally participants reached the press club, TLP workers also reached Hyder Chowk and were stopped near the DC House by police.

Due to the tension, police personnel were deployed around the press club and Hyder Chowk and the area was sealed with barbed wire. DIG Tariq Dharejo and SSP Farrukh Lanjar were also monitoring the situation themselves. The police dispersed the TLP rally by firing tear gas shells and using batons. They also made arrests.

Later, TLP leaders held a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club and said the administration and the police allowed the liberals to hold a rally, but a religious party was stopped, which was completely unfair.
