MANSEHRA: The newly elected chairperson of the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), Mukhtar Javed has said the true essence of democracy lies in protection of human rights.

“Democracy means safeguarding human rights. The proactive role played by the FAFEN has earned recognition both within the country and abroad,” he told reporters here.

Mukhtar Javed, a resident of the Jarad area of the Kaghan Valley was recently elected as the FAFEN chairperson earlier this week.

He said that his election was a positive development for the people of rural Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“We have been striving for the enforcement of true democratic norms for almost three decades. It is now time to work collectively to strengthen democracy in the country,” he said. The FAFEN chairperson vowed to promote democracy, inclusive governance, and sustainable development.

“I began my career in the social sector from the underdeveloped Jarad area of the Kaghan valley three decades ago, bringing progress to the region. I intend to replicate that same dedication in my new role,” Mukhtar Javed said.

He said that the country as a whole and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in particular, required such networks to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level.
