Islamabad : The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board on Friday announced the approval of the Margalla Viewpoint eco-restoration master plan, saying the step marks a major advancement in efforts to rejuvenate the Margalla Hills into a flourishing ecosystem and a prime tourist destination.
The development came during the fifth meeting of the Implementation Committee.
The IWMB officials said the master plan, designed by architect Imrana Tiwana in collaboration with Islamabad-based Architect DB Studio, was the result of extensive planning and input from stakeholders and meant to create a green space that not only restored the natural beauty of the Margalla Hills but also offered a unique recreational environment for both residents and visitors.
They said key features of the master plan were promenades and walking trails, reflecting pool and eco-display area, open-air amphi-theatre, play area for children, sitting areas for elders, prayer area, visitor information centre, office spaces, and parking areas. The officials said debris from the demolished mega restaurants had been removed and efforts to clear lantana and rewild the area would begin with the arrival of the next rains.
They said the WWF Pakistan would soon launch fundraising initiatives to support the project, with work expected to commence shortly thereafter.
The officials also said the master plan, along with the completed Environmental Impact Assessment, would be submitted to the Environment Protection Agency for final approval.
The IWMB chairperson hailed the approval of the master plan, saying it marks a significant milestone in the board's efforts to restore the Margalla Hills ecosystem.
