ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has achieved a significant milestone in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Pakistan through collaboration with a private sector organisation, Fatima Fertiliser.
This partnership is a significant milestone as it marks the first time a private sector entity in Pakistan has adopted the UNDP’s SDG framework. This initiative reflects UNDP’s dedication to promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, environmental sustainability, and the overall achievement of the SDGs in Pakistan.
The event for the special report, “SDGs Impact through Businesses: Sustainability Framework for Fatima Fertiliser,” highlighted how the private sector with the SDGs can contribute to societal well-being and environmental situation.
Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for National Food Security and Research, as the chief guest, said this report is a testament to how businesses like Fatima Fertiliser can drive transformative change by aligning their operations with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
“By adopting innovative and sustainable practices, we can enhance agricultural productivity, address food security challenges, and pave the way for a greener, more equitable future for Pakistan. This initiative reaffirms our collective commitment to building a sustainable and prosperous tomorrow through collaboration and responsible action,” he added.
Dr Samuel Rizk, Resident Representative of UNDP Pakistan, commended the collaboration, calling it a trailblazer for SDG in the country. “By voluntarily designing its SDG reporting framework, Fatima Fertilizer has shown how businesses can achieve financial benefits while contributing to societal well-being,” he said.
“Private sector involvement is crucial for achieving SDG targets in Pakistan,” said Ammara Durrani, Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP. “Fatima Fertilizer’s pioneering efforts showcase how businesses can align their operations with national and global development priorities, addressing issues such as food security, gender equality, and sustainable agricultural practices.”
As the first private sector entity to adopt the SDG Impact Framework, Fatima Fertilizer has embedded sustainability into its business operations. The company has mapped eight critical areas aligning with relevant UN SDGs, from promoting sustainable agriculture to reducing environmental footprints.
Speaking at the event, Rabel Sadozai, Director of Marketing and Sales at Fatima Group, remarked, “This sustainability framework will strengthen our resolve and inspire us to accelerate our efforts in sustainable development. We aim to set an example for other private sector organisations to embrace sustainable practices.”
The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Asad Murad, reiterated Fatima Fertiliser’s dedication to food security and environmental sustainability. “Sustainable development represents the future of responsible business. This collaboration reflects our strong commitment to making meaningful contributions to Pakistan’s development,” he added.
The event convened government officials, private sector partners, and sustainability experts, underscoring the significance of public-private partnerships for development goals. Through initiatives like this, UNDP aims to inspire other private sector entities to adopt similar frameworks, accelerating progress toward a sustainable, equitable future for Pakistan.
