LAHORE: Pakistan’s interim white-ball head coach Aqib Javed has outlined his vision for the national cricket team, emphasising the development of a winning squad and the revival of key players like Fakhar Zaman.

Speaking to the media at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday, Aqib discussed his strategic plans, fitness, team selection, and long-term goals for Pakistan cricket.

Aqib, appointed to the role following Gary Kirsten’s resignation, stated that his primary objective is to develop a team capable of consistent success. “My priority is to build a capable team with qualities to win,” Aqib said, underlining the importance of fitness.

Highlighting Fakhar Zaman’s potential, Aqib called him a “match-winner” and assured that the batter will be selected if he regains full fitness. “Fakhar Zaman is a key player for Pakistan, and once he’s fully fit, he will definitely play,” he affirmed.

Aqib detailed his approach to team management, emphasising the importance of collaboration between the captain, coach, and selection committee. “The selection committee does not finalise a squad without the consent of the captain and the coach. We are working collectively to pick the best available players,” he explained.

With over 22 years of coaching experience, Aqib aims to transform Pakistan cricket. He emphasised the need to adapt strategies based on upcoming challenges, particularly focusing on ODIs in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy.

“There is still over a year left for the next T20 World Cup, so changes will be introduced. New players will be given opportunities, as seen with the selections for Zimbabwe,” Aqib said. Aqib addressed Fakhar Zaman’s exclusion from the central contracts list, citing fitness concerns as a significant factor.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi previously mentioned issues with Fakhar’s fitness tests and a pending show-cause notice related to a controversial tweet. Aqib echoed the sentiment, stressing that fitness remains a non-negotiable criterion for team selection.
