LAHORE: Spain is Pakistan’s second-largest export partner in the European Union, and there are numerous opportunities to enhance bilateral trade, said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during her meeting with a delegation from the Spanish Senate.
The meeting focused on fostering bilateral relations, trade, and tourism between Spain and Punjab. Discussions included an agreement to enhance cooperation in the economy, climate change, disaster risk management, and environmental pollution.
The chief minister said, “We appreciate Spain’s support in achieving GSP Plus status and highly value our friendly ties with Spain.” She emphasised the importance of collaboration, saying, “We aim to work with Spain on early warning systems and rescue services to prevent flood damage,” and added, “We also intend to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy.” Highlighting Punjab’s potential, she said, “We are transforming Punjab into a tourist hub and welcome Spanish investment in the sector. A special package is being prepared to facilitate foreign investors.” Focusing on social initiatives, Maryam Nawaz stressed, “Women empowerment remains a priority, and the number of female parliamentarians has significantly increased.”
The chief minister expressed condolences over the loss of life and property in the recent floods in Valencia, Spain, offering support for relief and recovery efforts. She also acknowledged Spain’s contributions to the flood response plan in Pakistan.
The Spanish delegation praised her leadership, saying, “It is commendable to have a woman as chief minister, running provincial affairs smoothly.” They also referenced the street in Cordoba named after Allama Iqbal as a symbol of cultural ties between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who fell into an open manhole at Children’s Hospital. Lahore. Seeking a report from the health secretary, she directed, “Immediate legal action must be taken against those responsible. An open manhole in a hospital is criminal negligence.”
She extended condolences to the bereaved family and expressed deep sympathy over their loss. MESSAGE: “Children are my red line, and I will ensure their protection against all forms of violence,” said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in her message on World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence.
She underscored, “Children are our future, and their protection is a collective responsibility.” Addressing societal issues, she said, “It is heartbreaking that some children fall victim to abuse and violence, which severely affects their mental, physical, and emotional well-being.”
The chief minister highlighted steps taken by the government, including the establishment of Pakistan’s first Virtual Child Safety Center and the activation of the Child Protection Bureau. She urged parents, teachers, and society at large to play their roles in safeguarding children.
On the directive of Chief Minister Maryam Nawazf, the ‘Maryam Ke Dastak’ programme has been expanded to 32 districts across Punjab. Ten new districts, including Rahim Yar Khan, Vehari, Lodhran, and Gujrat, have been added to the initiative.
The programme provides over 65 government services, including the issuance of domicile certificates, FIR copies, birth certificates, learner’s driving licenses, and e-stamping, through a doorstep delivery app and web portal developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). Citizens can also access services by calling the helpline at 1202.
PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf said, “This initiative enhances service delivery by providing trained representatives to ensure a more efficient and citizen-friendly experience. It reflects the government’s commitment to accessible and transparent public service.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of senior journalist, writer, and intellectual Khaled Ahmed. She offered condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, recognising his significant contributions to journalism and literature.
