PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to convene a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) as mandated by Article 154(3) of the Constitution.

In the letter, he mentioned the constitutional requirement of holding a meeting of the CCI every 90 days, adding that the last session was held in January 2024. Gandapur expressed concern over the adverse implications of this delay, noting that the CCI was a vital forum for addressing issues faced by federating units and fostering inter-provincial harmony.

“The timely convening of the CCI meeting is essential for addressing critical issues faced by the provinces and enhancing collaborative efforts in bringing peace and harmony among the provinces, which is also critical for the socio-economic development of Pakistan,” Gandapur wrote in his letter.

He underscored the importance of adhering to constitutional obligations, stating that regular meetings of the CCI would not only resolve disputes but also strengthen relations between the federal and provinces.

The CCI, established under the 1973 Constitution and empowered by the 18th Amendment, plays a pivotal role in regulating shared matters such as energy, natural resources, and higher education, ensuring governance aligns with provincial autonomy.

The chief minister requested the prime minister to fulfill his constitutional responsibility and address pressing socio-economic and political challenges while fostering unity across the federation.
