Aqib’s appointment as interim white-ball head coach confirmed

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed the appointment of Aqib Javed, former international fast bowler, as the interim head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team for white-ball formats.

Aqib will hold the position until the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled from February 19 to March 9. In addition to his coaching duties, Aqib will continue serving as a senior member of the National Selection Committee. The PCB has also announced plans to initiate the recruitment of a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming to finalise the appointment after the Champions Trophy.

The white-ball coaching position became vacant following the resignation of Gary Kirsten, while red-ball coach Jason Gillespie stepped in to lead the team during the recent tour of Australia. Gillespie will resume his role as red-ball head coach for the upcoming two-Test series in South Africa.

Aqib Javed’s first challenge as interim head coach will be Pakistan’s white-ball series against Zimbabwe from November 24 – December 5 including three ODIs and three T20Is. It will be followed by South Africa Series (December 10 – 22): Three ODIs and three T20Is and ODI Triangular Series (February 8 – 14, 2025): Against New Zealand and South Africa in Pakistan, as part of preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy.

PCB said that Aqib has a a proven track record. “Aqib Javed, known for his tactical acumen and extensive coaching experience, has been a key figure in franchise and domestic cricket. His interim appointment reflects PCB’s confidence in his ability to steer the team through a critical phase, focusing on building momentum ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.”
