The recent swift passage of multiple laws through parliament has evoked serious concerns in most Pakistanis. These changes, which have significantly altered the judiciary’s structure, modified the Practice & Procedure Act, and extended the service tenure of military chiefs, were passed in a record 40 minutes, without transparency or adequate discussion. The opposition members, surprised by the speed of these developments, were left struggling to voice their views.
It seems that the PML N-PPP coalition government, frustrated by previous compromises made on the 26th amendment, chose to push through these laws quickly, thereby increasing the executive’s control over the judiciary. This legislative rush undermines the integrity of the parliamentary process, as six bills were passed without proper review or committee referral. It seems political motives are taking precedence over stability.
