This letter refers to the news story ‘SC devises plan for 59,191 pending cases’ (October 29, 2024). Pendency has been a long-term issue for the judicial system. This initiative will certainly be a great service to the public. Mediation in civil cases, before they go to trial, is another way to deal with the backlog in a quicker way as many cases do not need to even go to trial.
These efforts will not only the reduce pressure on the judiciary itself, but will give ordinary people a sense of gratification and help revive their confidence in the judicial system. If the CJP and his team accomplishes even 50 per cent of their targets that would be a welcome change, one that the people of Pakistan have been looking forward to for generations.
