Islamabad : Dr Sarwar Malik, head of the Endocrinology Department at CDA Hospital, emphasised the importance of early diabetes detection and proper management to address the rising prevalence of the disease in the country.

"With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, diabetes can be effectively controlled. Raising public awareness about its symptoms and ensuring early intervention are crucial in preventing long-term complications," Dr Malik said during a World Diabetes Day event organised by his department.

He outlined different types of diabetes and said its common symptoms included increased thirst, frequent urination, and slow-healing cuts and sores.

The endocrinologist warned that if left undiagnosed, diabetes could become a life-threatening condition.

He said Type 2 diabetes, the most prevalent form, primarily affected adults and occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or didn't produce enough of it.

"Over the past 30 years, the incidence of type 2 diabetes has surged significantly," he said, calling for better access of those living with diabetes to affordable treatment, especially insulin.

The other participants included Executive Director of CDA Hospital Dr Naeem Taj, Head of the ENT Department Dr. Ghulam Saqlain, Deputy Director Dr. Suleman, cardiac surgeon Dr. Mahrukh, Head of the Eye Department at CDA Hospital Dr. Waqar, Head of the Psychiatry Department Dr. Shumaila, spine surgeon Dr. Khalid, maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Jamal, neurophysician Dr. Waleed, pediatric surgeon Dr. Bashir, plastic surgeon Dr. Yasir, and vascular surgeon Dr. Kishwar.

Fellows in endocrinology Dr Hanan, Dr Akram, Dr Hina Inayat, and Dr Maria Shafi, along with medical officers, postgraduate trainees, house officers, and hospital staff were also in attendance.

The organisers said the event was meant to raise awareness of diabetes, its growing prevalence, and to promote preventive measures for effectively managing and controlling the condition.

ED Dr Naeem Taj highlighted the growing threat of diabetes and the importance of public education to prevent and manage the disease.

"Diabetes is a global health challenge, and on this World Diabetes Day, our focus is on creating awareness about this disease and encouraging individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles and preventive measures," he said.

Dr Hina Inayat offered guidance on lifestyle changes and dietary adjustments to prevent the onset of diabetes.

Dr Maria Shafi highlighted the latest advancements in diabetes care, while Dr Hanan and Dr Akram highlighted the treatment and complications related to diabetes.
