Smog on wheels
Punjab is caught in the clutches of unrelenting and hazardous smog. One of the major causes behind this problem is the excessive number of vehicles on the road. As the number of vehicles keeps growing, the smog problem only intensifies every year. There was a time when many households did not own a car and those that did only had one car.
Over the last two decades or so, car ownership has sky rocketed. Households that own three to four cars, one for each member of the family, are no longer uncommon. Un-tuned diesel vehicles need to be banned as they emit black smoke. We must also explore options like carpooling to help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. Planting trees and creating more green spaces will also reduce smog.
