PESHAWAR: The Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) has replaced the old water distribution network in University Town here with modern, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes to provide safe drinking water to approximately 10,000 residents of the area, an official said on Thursday

Under the project the decades-old asbestos piping, which posed severe health risks due to contamination issues have been replaced and they are now supplying clean water to 1,050 homes, markets, and shops.

The asbestos pipes, which had been in use for over 40 years, were known to be vulnerable to leaks and contamination, often allowing sewage to mix with the water supply. Asbestos pipes also required frequent maintenance due to joint breakage, further compromising water safety. According to WSSP Chief Executive Officer, Yasir Ali Khan, the installation of high-density polyethylene pipes would not only eliminate the issues but also pave the way for improved water quality and operational savings.

The new system is already helping the WSSP register illegal water connections, increasing the number of legitimate users. Testing of water quality from the new network is currently underway to ensure continued standards. “The replacement of the water distribution network will enhance the number of legal consumers and increase revenue,” Yasir Ali Khan said. He noted that the change has already reduced customer complaints about contaminated and insufficient water.

The updated water network, encompassing all major roads in University Town - including School Road, Mulberry Road, and Rehman Baba Road - has significantly reduced leakage and contamination while achieving a one-third reduction in electricity costs associated with water distribution.

The HDPE pipes have a lifespan of 30 to 40 years and were selected following international quality standards to ensure a long-lasting solution for clean drinking water in the University Town Peshawar, the Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar head said.
