Islamabad: The National Emergency Operation Centre has issued a warning regarding the ongoing smog conditions in the plains of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, forecasting that the pollution will persist throughout November and December due to prevailing atmospheric conditions. According to it, urban centres, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Mardan, and Nowshera, are expected to experience extended periods of smog during these months.
In light of the situation, it urged people to take precautionary measures to minimise exposure to harmful air pollution. People, particularly those with respiratory conditions, are advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, while individuals wear masks when venturing outside, especially in areas where smog is dense. Health experts have warned the prolonged presence of smog poses significant health risks, including respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other related ailments, and could exacerbate their conditions. They called for better public awareness and action in mitigating the effects of air pollution.
Closure of schools condemned
Rawalpindi:Pakistan Chamber of Education has condemned the closure of educational institutions by the Punjab government in the pretext of prevailing smog.
There is no reason to close educational institutions, in the districts in which there is no smog. The authority of emergency holidays should be given to every district education authority, says a press release.
In many districts including Rawalpindi, there is no smog problem to close schools. These views were expressed by the member of the advisory council, Chaudhry Muhammad Tayyab. Pakistan Chamber of Education President Muhammad Asif said in a statement regarding the holidays given in schools by the Punjab government. The leaders of the Pakistan Chamber of Education said that the Punjab government should consult the stakeholders before closing the schools.
NHMP official laid to rest
Islamabad: The funeral prayers of Sub-Inspector Shabbir Ahmed held with full state honours, was attended by Inspector General (IG) National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) Salman Chaudhry, Additional IG North Region Yasin Farooq, senior officers, and a large number of local residents, says a press release.
Sub-Inspector Shabbir Ahmed and Head Constable Sohail Malik were assisting a damaged vehicle near Butgram when they were struck by a negligent driver. Despite being taken to DHQ Butgram and later to AMC Abbottabad due to severe injuries, Sub-Inspector Shabbir Ahmed succumbed to his injuries and embraced martyrdom.
IG Salman Chaudhry extended condolences to the family of the martyr, who is survived by a widow, three daughters and two sons, and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured head constable. The IG also paid tribute to the courage and dedication of Sub-Inspector Shabbir Ahmed, acknowledging the unparalleled sacrifices made by Motorway Police officers who put their lives at risk daily for public safety.
