ISLAMABAD: Engineer Muhammad Shabbir here on Friday assumed the charge of Member KP in the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) for three years and also took the charge of authority chairman for one year from November 1, 2024, says a notification issued by Irsa.
Irsa Secretary Khalid Idrees Rana explained to The News that in the authority, the chairman is made on rotational basis from within the members who represent their respective provinces for a one-year term. Earlier, Member Balochistan Abdul Hameed Mengal was the Irsa chairman for one year term which expired on April 30, 2024.
After the KP’s regular member in Irsa completed his tenure of three years, no new nomination from the province had appeared. As a result, Irrigation Secretary Muhammad Irrigation Ayyaz assumed the charge of Irsa chairman from May 1, 2024 on temporary basis under the Irsa Act.
The Ministry of Water Resources, he said, notified on October 29 the name of Engineer Muhammad Shabbir as the new member of KP in Irsa on the recommendation of the provincial government. “Engineer Muhammad Shabbir joined Irsa on November 1, 2024 as Member IRSA for three years and also assumed the charge of Irsa chairman for one year.”
