Rawalpindi: In a joint effort to address the rising challenge of water scarcity, Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust (AHKMT) and Empowerment Thru Creative Integration (ECI), with support from Unicef, ADP, and Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), launched a series of water conservation awareness sessions in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi, says a press release.

The campaign, which began on Sunday, October 27, aims to equip local communities with practical knowledge to adopt climate-resilient and water-saving behaviours.

The campaign’s primary focus is on educating women, including mothers and housemaids, who play a critical role in managing household water usage. By empowering them with practical water-saving techniques, the initiative seeks to foster a culture of sustainable water management within the community.

Over the course of the campaign, 25 sessions have been planned across various blocks in Satellite Town, with five sessions held in each block. These sessions have already seen active participation, with a total of 625 people attending, representing churches, schools, colleges, training institutes, and community groups. Sessions have been conducted in public parks in Blocks F and B, women’s hostels, and even at the Women’s University on 6th Road.

A special series of five sessions took place at the Women’s University on October 30, where 125 students from various departments attended. The university’s Psychology Department, with the assistance of Dr. Sobia Masood, Head of Department, and Dr. Sadia Rayna, was instrumental in organising this event.

AHKMT’s team, led by CEO Sumaira Gul and Team Leader Hamid Ullah, along with trainers Fateeha Tariq, Nimra, Zulfiqar Ali, Aurang Zeb, and M. Nadeem, actively conducted the sessions, emphasising simple, effective water-saving practices for daily life.

ECI representative Naeem joined as a guest, sharing insights and support for the initiative. In appreciation, the university presented a shield to the AHKMT team at the event’s close, acknowledging their efforts to make a difference in local water conservation practices.

With the support of dedicated local organisations and engaged community members, AHKMT and ECI hope these efforts will contribute to building a water-efficient, climate-resilient community in Rawalpindi.
