Life in Orangi Town, Karachi, is being severely impacted by frequent loadshedding. Businesses and educational institutions face disruptions due to power outages lasting up to 8–10 hours daily. Small business owners report a 25 per cent drop in productivity during these outages, while 60 per cent of students find it challenging to complete their coursework, often relying on evening hours to finish assignments.
According to a report from K-Electric, power theft accounts for around 40 per cent of energy losses. This theft, along with deteriorating infrastructure, contributes to the higher incidence of load shedding in low-income areas like Orangi Town. Addressing the illegal 'kunda system' should be a priority to ensure a fair loadshedding schedule and reduce unplanned outages. During Karachi's long summer months, the lack of electricity is particularly hard on households. It is crucial for the government and power companies to take immediate action to reduce unscheduled outages and improve infrastructure in low-income areas like Orangi Town.
