Court moved against sugar mills’ action
LAHORE : Sardar Zafar Hussain Khan, President of the Pakistan Farmers Board, has filed a writ in a court through Rana Zubair Afzal Advocate against the ‘anti-farmer’ actions of sugar mills.
He alleged that the sugar mill mafia is using illegal tactics to economically hold sugarcane farmers hostage, with full backing from the Punjab government. He added that this government first destroyed the wheat crop, and now it seeks to economically exploit the sugarcane crop for its own benefit.
He also mentioned that, 21 years ago, a separate Sugarcane Department was created to prevent sugar mills from having undue control. Despite this, sugar mills have still withheld billions of rupees from farmers. The President of the Pakistan Farmers Board declared that they would wage a full legal battle against the government-backed mafias, fight for farmers’ rights, and are prepared to go to any lengths for the farmers’ cause. He urged the government to refrain from economically exploiting farmers.
