Islamabad : A male leopard, rescued from the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region lately, died from bullet injuries at the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board's Rescue Centre here.
The 6.5-year-old feline, Nawab, was shot twice, with one bullet removed from his spine, while the other remained lodged inside, according to an IWMB official.
He said that the bullets caused significant damage, including fractured vertebrae and spinal cord injury. The official also said that the leopard suffered from fluid in the lungs and internal bleeding. He said that in light of paralysis from injuries, veterinarians took the difficult decision to put the big cat down. The official said that while mourning the leopard's death, the IWMB remained committed to protecting endangered wildlife in the country.
Earlier this month, a young leopard cub, rescued from Haripur district in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, died of chronic kidney disease at the IWMB Rescue Centre despite extensive medical care. The cub, Sultan, was brought to the centre exhibiting signs of illness, including vomiting.
