Two colliers from Shangla killed in Hangu mine collapse

ALPURI: Two more miners from the Shangla district were killed and another sustained serious injuries in a coalmine collapse in Tora Warai area in Hangu district on Monday.

Sources said that the incident occurred in Tora Warai area in lease number 12 run by contractor Habib Rahman near Hangu in the jurisdiction of Chanarak Police Station.They said that three workers were inside the mine when a mud fell on the coalmine that collapsed the mine and the labourers got trapped inside.

As a result, two workers identified as Hazrat Nawab and Syed Nabi lost their lives, while the third one Syed Wali sustained injuries.The bodies of the labourers were transported to their hometown in Koz Kana in Shangla for burial.The injured worker was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Gloom prevailed in the area.

Hundreds of families from the Shangla district have fallen victim to the incidents of coalmine collapse all over the country, most of which result from official apathy and lack of safety measures by mine owners.

Owing to the rough terrain, scarce employment opportunities and lack of basic civic facilities, the Shangla residents have no other choice but to look for odd jobs as mine workers all over the country to eke out a living.The mines lack facilities and the miners work under unfavourable conditions inside the quarries.
