ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 45 million children from the crippling effects of polio.

This is Pakistan’s third nationwide campaign this year, launched in response to the alarming increase in polio cases, with 41 cases reported so far in 2024 and across 71 districts. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House in connection with the World Polio Day observance, he underscored the urgency of Pakistan’s battle against the recent resurgence of wild poliovirus and the importance of the campaign to prevent the disease from spreading further.

“Polio has re-emerged in Pakistan, reminding us of our collective responsibility to overcome this threat. Together, we must fight this battle with unity and determination until we secure a polio-free Pakistan,” PM Shehbaz said, as he personally administered polio drops to children at the ceremony.

He commended the tireless efforts of the frontline health workers, who continue to go door-to-door to ensure that no child was missed during the vaccination campaign. With an alarming rise in polio cases, the campaign, which will run from October 28 to November 3, has become crucial to Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts.

Over 41 polio cases have been reported across 71 districts so far in 2024, highlighting the need for reinforced immunization. Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza Farooq, reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to eradicating the virus, noting that under the PM’s guidance, polio teams are “re-energised” in their mission.

“Under the Prime Minister’s guidance, we are re-energised in our efforts to combat polio. Starting October 28, our polio workers will reach every corner of Pakistan, delivering the vaccine and securing a healthier future for our children,” Farooq said.

She also called on parents to prioritise vaccinations, warning of the increased risk posed by the virus’s presence in 71 districts. “With the virus now present in 71 districts, the risk to every child is real. The Government of Pakistan is bringing this vaccine directly to your doorsteps. Please welcome and support our dedicated health workers by ensuring your children are vaccinated.”

The seven-day campaign aims to vaccinate children under the age of five and will also provide Vitamin A supplements to enhance immunity. Adding to the call for public cooperation, Muhammad Anwarul Haq, Coordinator for the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication, urged all parents to fully support polio workers.

“Polio has no cure, but it can be prevented with this readily available vaccine. With the threat at an all-time high, we must act as one nation to keep our children safe through vaccination,” he stressed.

Throughout the campaign, parents will have access to the Sehat Tahhafuz Helpline 1166 and the 24/7 WhatsApp Helpline at 0346-7776546, both available to provide information and address any instances of children missed during the drive.
