While Urdu might be the official national language of Pakistan, it is now clear that Urdu is looked at unfavourably compared to English, particularly by the upper echelons of society. English is the medium of our most prestigious schools and jobs and also the language in which most of our civil service exams are conducted.
As a result, many young people today do not have enough knowledge about their language, culture, poets, literature or even writers. This is the sad reality of our state. As a Pakistani, it is our responsibility to encourage our language. The government should take some strict measures and give priority to our national language and its literature.
