ISLAMABAD: After receiving a show-cause notice in relation to the 26th Constitutional Amendment, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNA Zain Hussain Qureshi has resigned from the post of deputy parliamentary leader in the National Assembly.
Zain, who is the son of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the incarcerated PTI leader, had gone underground on the occasion of tabling and passage of the constitutional amendment, giving rise to speculations about his absence. The PTI had announced to boycott voting on the amendment.
“Based on my belief for a free and transparent inquiry and in recognition of the sentiment of our party supporters, I am resigning from my role as deputy parliamentary leader,” Qureshi posted a message on his social media account. He also wrote, “I do so until and unless I have the confidence and trust of my party and our Founding Chairman, Imran Khan.
“Also in the interest of public transparency for all PTI supporters, I have now replied formally to my show cause notice providing a comprehensive account,” he maintained.
He emphasized his allegiance to the party and said, “I was, am and will remain faithful to my party, to my leader @ImranKhanPTI and to my father @SMQureshiPTI and all that he stands for.”
It should be noted that on the passage of the widely discussed constitutional amendment, the PTI had issued show-cause notices to some ‘defecting members’, suspecting their role with regards to the key legislation.
Meanwhile, Zain in a video message said that he would quit politics if his meeting with a government official is proved, explaining that he went into hiding at the request of his father. He contended that Shah Mehmood Qureshi called him to Lahore and asked him to go into hiding in case the constitutional amendment was not approved. However, he regretted that misleading propaganda was being done against him on his alleged support for the amendment.
