LAHORE:The Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) Officers Association (Punjab Chapter) has strongly condemned and expressed profound concern and outrage over life threats directed at Anum Akram, the Assistant Commissioner of Karor Lal Easan District Layyah.

This disturbing incident, involving intimidation by a local lawyer, underscores the grave risks faced by women in public service and raises critical questions about the safety and respect afforded to public officials.

On October 19, 2024, during an official meeting, the lawyer confronted lady Assistant Commissioner Anum Akram, demanding vacation of a status quo and cancel official mutations. When she called for necessary documentation, the lawyer resorted to aggression, threatening her life, breaking a glass door, and brandishing a firearm. In the aftermath, the lawyer escalated his intimidation by sending abusive voice notes. In response to this harassment, the officer, Anum Akram filed a complaint under the Anti-Terrorism Act, resulting in lawyer’s arrest and judicial remand.

While talking to Jang and The News, the President of the Pakistan Administrative Service Officers Association (PASA) Punjab Chapter Dr Ehsan Bhutta said, “ The PASA has rallied behind Anum Akram. We praise her dedication to public service and her resilience in the face of such threats”. The official statement of PASA underscores the urgent need for systemic change to protect public officials, particularly women, from harassment and violence.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by women in public service, reinforcing the need for collective action to protect their rights and uphold the integrity of public institutions. This troubling incident calls for immediate action from the government and judiciary to ensure justice is served and to reinforce the principle that intimidation has no place in a democratic society. As the community rallies in support of Akram, the message is clear: respect and safety for public servants must be a priority.
