The issue of journalist safety in Pakistan urgently needs the attention of the authorities. Journalists are often frontline workers who report on-the-ground events and try to present the truth, providing people with comprehensive coverage of various issues. However, in the face of rising pressures and threats, one must ask: why do media platforms not take stronger measures to protect their journalists from the various dangers they encounter in the line of duty? Recent reports indicate that eight journalists in Pakistan have lost their lives in 2024 while performing their duties.
In addition to physical assault and threats, journalists also have to deal with digital and social media harassment, which affects both male and female journalists. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), violence against journalists has been a persistent issue in the country for decades. Given that these journalists work in the interest of people, why do our policymakers not ensure their protection at all times?
