The Police Act of 1861 was introduced by the British authorities following the War of Independence of 1857-58. Its purpose was to maintain tight control over the local population (natives).
It was modeled after a law introduced in Ireland by the British to subdue and control the Irish people. Unfortunately, even after 77 years of independence, past and present governments have chosen to retain the Police Act of 1861, despite the existence of the more people-friendly Police Act of 2002.
