A vigilant and courageous traffic policeman came to a citizen’s rescue in the Clifton area on Tuesday as he helped chase off two would-be muggers near the Teen Talwar intersection.

According to officials, a citizen named Muhammad Faheem had withdrawn over Rs6,00,000 from a bank branch on Boat Basin and when he reached the Teen Talwar traffic signal, three men on a motorcycle tried to snatch the cash from him.

A traffic cop, Constable Zafar, saw the incident and opened aerial fire, scaring away the would-be robbers. As the criminals fled away, the general public greatly appreciated Constable Zafar’s act of valour and the cop was also rewarded for his deed.

A case had also been registered and efforts were underway to find the suspects.

Gangster killed

In a shootout, the District City police claimed to have gunned down a notorious member of Lyari’s Shiraz Comrade group.

Police said they had raided a locality near Slaughter House Road in Baghdadi on a tip-off and an encounter ensued as the criminals tried to flee.

Following the shootout, one gangster was arrested in injured condition while the others managed to get away. Police said the injured gangster – identified as Husnain alias Shetty – was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) but was pronounced dead on arrival. A pistol was found in his possession.

Officials said Husnain was a close associate of Shiraz Comrade and was wanted in dozens of target killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom cases.
