The erratic gas supply in Karachi has disrupted daily life, especially for households that rely on gas for cooking and heating, and for businesses, particularly in the industrial sector, that depend on a steady energy supply. The situation becomes especially dire during winter months when demand peaks, yet the supply dwindles further. Many residents are left with no choice but to use alternative and often more expensive energy sources such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or electricity, both of which are unreliable and unaffordable for many households. The lack of gas not only hampers daily life but also poses a financial burden, adding to the already high cost of living in the city.
While the authorities have cited various reasons, including pipeline issues, gas theft, and a widening supply-demand gap, these explanations have become repetitive without significant improvements in the situation. What is needed is a comprehensive strategy that addresses both short-term fixes and long-term solutions. Investing in the maintenance and expansion of the gas supply network, curbing gas theft, and exploring alternative energy sources must be prioritised.
