LAHORE: The Punjab Charities Commission, a regulatory body created by the government of more than 7,500 NGOs, charities and welfare trusts of Punjab, has launched a project to increase links between students and NGOs to promote “Safe Charity” in the province.

The Punjab Charities Commission issued instructions to the administration of all districts of the province to visit 5 to 10 NGOs in their districts every month under the outreach program of the commission and to inform them about the new international charity laws and their implementation. The district administration has also been asked to encourage good-performing NGOs and help them solve their problems. Under the outreach program of the Punjab Charities Commission, work has been started from Punjab University to create a common platform for 100 major NGOs of Punjab and students of sociology departments of universities. Sources said that it is not only the government’s responsibility to oversee and monitor the use of zakat and charity, but also the public, for which university students are being specially involved in the project. The Punjab Charities Commission has organized an open discussion between NGOs and students of various universities and in this regard special programs are being organized in Home Economics University of Lahore, Government College University and Lahore University during this month in which student training programs are being organized to make poor people economically stronger through social welfare.
