Prisons Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hassan Sehto on Monday suspended seven police officials and personnel of the District Jail Malir after a prisoner held in a kidnapping and assault case escaped from the jail.
A case was also registered at the Shah Latif Town police station against the seven officers stationed at the jail for negligence and carelessness, leading to their arrests. The escaped prisoner, Muhammad Javed, son of Abdul Majid, had been arrested in connection with a kidnapping and assault case. He managed to escape on Sunday afternoon by cutting the window of the bathroom and climbing over the jail wall.
The prisoner had been arrested by the SITE Super Highway Police two years ago. The seven policemen booked over the escape include Head Constable Waheed Tanoli, Head Constable Khadim Hussain, Muhammad Ikram, Constable Shehzad, Police Constable Qaim Khan, Mehmood Uddin and Police Constable Nadeem Jatoi. The case was filed by Deputy Superintendent of Malir Jail Zulfiqar Ali Pirzada.
Police said they had begun searching for the escaped prisoner. It was stated in a letter by the Jail superintendent that the prisoner first cut the iron grill attached to the bathroom, after which he used a hand-made bamboo stick to climb over the wall. Additionally, he utilised a rope made from his hands to aid his escape. He managed to climb from the wall between Watch Tower 7 and 9, allowing him to flee from the premises.
