World Audiology Day marked at KMU

PESHAWAR: Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar on Monday organized a practical workshop on new concepts in audiology to mark World Audiology Day.

The workshop, titled “Cochlear Implants: New Concepts in Audiology,” was held by the Audiology Department of the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPMR), KMU, in line with similar activities across KP and the rest of the country.

The event’s chief guest was Dr. Syed Muhammad Ilyas, CEO of Paraplegic Centre Peshawar.The gathering was also attended by Dr. Zile Huma, Director of Academics, and Dr. Irfanullah, Director of IPMR, along with faculty members and a large number of students.

Audiology is a medical field related to the structure of the ears, hearing problems, their diagnosis, treatment, and hearing rehabilitation.Audiologists use various technologies and techniques to treat hearing issues such as deafness or hearing loss.

In his keynote address, Dr. Syed Muhammad Ilyas shed light on the impact of hearing on overall human health.He emphasized the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach in healthcare, urging the government to develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure public health.

He highlighted the five key pillars of healthcare-promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative care-underscoring the need for an integrated approach to improve treatment quality and enhance the dignity of healthcare professionals.

Other speakers included cochlear implant surgeon Dr. Ihsanullah, and senior audiologists Ihsan Saeed, Muhammad Jehangir Badar, Sohail Ahmed, Kashif Ali Shah, and Rafiq Ahmed.They provided insights into the effectiveness of cochlear implants in treating hearing impairments.
