LAHORE: The 104-member Pakistani Senate has been more active since its establishment than the Indian Upper House of Parliament called the Rajya Sabha, research shows.
However, as of September 2024, the Indian Senate had ratified 106 amendments to the country’s January 26, 1950 Constitution, the world’s longest written charter with 146,385 words in its English-language version. The Pakistani Senate met for the 343rd time Sunday, since its formation on August 6, 1973 to pass the 26th Constitutional Amendment, meaning thereby that this legislative body has averagely been holding 6.73 sessions every year or has met after every 54th day during these 51 years under review.
On the other hand, the 245-member Indian Rajya Sabha has held 264 sessions till date since its formation on May 13, 1952, which thus means that it has averagely held only 3.66 sessions every year—or in the other words—it meets every 100th day (99.73).
