ISLAMABAD: Two leading athletes have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, yet again highlighting the negative tactics to improve performance at the domestic level.
Natalia Khan (sprint cycling) and Kashif Shah (bodybuilding) have tested positive for using steroids to improve their performances. Both athletes underwent random (off-competition) tests in August.
“Both have tested positive for using performance-enhancing drugs (anabolic androgen steroids). Notices have been issued to both the athletes about the positive results and have been asked to furnish reasons as to what led to the use of negative means to improve timing and strength,” an official of the domestic testing authority that is working under WADA said.
The official added that WADA has a zero-tolerance policy against doping.
“Under the strict WADA rules, we conducted off-competition tests to check the growing trend of performance-enhancing drugs use and two athletes tested positive. We continue to follow the laid down rules and have issued notices to the athletes.”
Both used anabolic androgen steroids which are meant to improve players’ overall stamina and strength.
According to the laid down rules, the two athletes will be given a chance to clarify their position. “Both athletes can opt for the B sample tests if they have not used drugs to enhance their performance. In that case, they have to bear the expenses of the second Test,” said the official.
“If these athletes have some other genuine and solid reasons that forced them to consume such a drug, they can share those circumstances with the body,” said the official.
“Suppose an athlete was forced to use a drug to recover from illness or injury. In that case, it is pertinent for him or her to share the nature of the drug including the prescription of a recognised doctor with the concerned authorities. However, ignorance is no excuse,” the official added.
