FPCCI urges federal tax ombudsman to improve business environment

LAHORE: President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Atif Ikram Sheikh, alongside Vice President and Regional Chairman Zaki Aijaz, discussed the critical role of the federal tax ombudsman in addressing complaints of tax mismanagement fairly, promptly and independently.

They noted that resolving injustices faced by taxpayers due to the actions of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials is essential to fostering a business-friendly environment, which in turn would increase government tax revenues.

These remarks were made during the visit of Federal Tax Ombudsman Dr Asif Mahmood Jah to the FPCCI Regional Office in Lahore on Friday.

The FPCCI officials proposed the appointment of a focal person to coordinate between the federal tax ombudsman and the FPCCI. This focal person would act as a bridge, ensuring effective communication and resolution of issues faced by customs agents and taxpayers. The FPCCI reiterated its commitment to finding solutions to the problems within the customs sector to drive further development in commerce.

During the meeting, the challenges faced by customs agents and taxpayers were highlighted. Dr Asif Mahmood Jah assured that their concerns would be addressed. He reaffirmed that the ombudsman’s role is to resolve issues related to tax payments swiftly and efficiently. He added that any unresolved cases presented to his office would be promptly dealt with.

Dr Jah also stressed the importance of regional trade, noting that while trade with India and Iran should be restored, there is currently no immediate possibility of that happening. He urged businessmen to report any instances of wrongful notices or cases where they were not properly heard, assuring them that such matters would be resolved without delay.
