PESHAWAR: A contempt of court petition was filed in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Friday against the non-appointment of vice-chancellors (VCs) for the 25 state-run universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Professor Aurangzeb and other teachers filed the petition through Aamir Javed Advocate. The petitioners said the contempt plea had been filed as the VCs had not been appointed despite the court directives. The KP government, chief secretary, Higher Education Department and others were made respondents in the petition.
The petitioners contended that the PHC had issued a detailed order on August 22 about the VCs appointment.
They recalled that the court had declared null and void the process initiated afresh by the KP government for the VCs appointment.
The court had directed the officials to place before the chief minister the recommendations made by the Search and Nomination Committee.
The court verdict had declared that the chief minister under the Section of the 12 Universities Act 2012 should approve the recommendations of the committee.
But the KP government, the petitioners said, was not implementing the court verdict even after almost a month. They believed that the parties had committed a contempt of court by disregarding the court verdict.
The petitioners said 25 varsities of KP were being run without permanent vice-chancellors and that was leading to multiple problems. They requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the KP government for not honouring the court verdict.
